Frequently asked questions

Simple questions and helpful answers

Are Lutherans Christian?
Yes - we believe Jesus is God's Son, our Savior.  We hold to the historic creeds of the church: Apostles, Nicene and Athanasian.  We believe we are saved by grace, through faith (Ephesians 2:8-10).  For a summary of some of our beliefs, see the Small Catechism

When and where did the Lutheran Church get its start?
There are two answers to that question.  The first is, in the Garden of Eden when God created man and woman and brought them into a relationship with Him (the definition of church.)  The second is, in 1517, Martin Luther and others broke from the Roman church over basic issues including the authority of the Bible, the power of any individual (other than Jesus) or groups to decide what the church must believe and the role of good works in salvation.

What is your worship like?
Most Lutheran churches are liturgical.  We follow an outline (liturgy) of worship that is both historic and Biblical.  Some Lutheran churches use only an organ for classic hymnal worship.  Others have both traditional and more contemporary worship utilizing worship teams with guitars and piano and drums.

For over 50 years, Our Savior has been blessed to work in the Aiea community - sharing and experiencing the love of Jesus.  Our community is very fluid - which comes with quite a few challenges - but it also means we get to meet some of the most amazing people from all over the world and together learn how God uses His people to make a difference.
