QUESTIONS ABOUT CHURCH ACTIVITIES
WHAT IS THE MAKE-UP OF YOUR CONGREGATION LIKE?
Our congregation is a mixture of people from all over Oahu including: Kamaʻāina, long-term Hawaii residents, current & retired military, and from various countries. We have multi-generational families/worshippers and several young families in attendance as well. We are a very welcoming congregation who follows the commands of God to love our neighbor as ourselves. One quote of Martin Luther’s that we use as inspiration is “God does not need your good works, but your neighbor does.”
HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?
If you are already a member of another LCMS Church – we can arrange a transfer of your membership – or you can call or e-mail your previous church and ask for them to transfer your membership. If you aren’t a member, you can schedule a time to talk to Pastor Mitch about membership. You aren’t required to be a member to attend worship or fellowship activities.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SUNDAYS
IS THERE AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP?
Yes! We have Christian fellowship after each service. The best opportunity for fellowship is from roughly 9:15 (when the traditional service ends) to 9:37 when we start our bible study group; however, you can stay in fellowship while bible study is going on if you’d like. Additionally, we have Christian fellowship options to include: 20/30s, men’s, VBX, plus other groups/opportunities throughout the month.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU OFFER HOLY COMMUNION?
We offer Holy Communion during the traditional service (8:15 AM) on the 1st and 3rd Sunday’s of the month and during the contemporary service (10:15 AM) on the 2nd and 4th Sunday’s of the month. We also celebrate communion on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Ash Wednesday and Easter.
AM I ALLOWED TO PARICIPATE IN HOLY COMMUNION?
All individuals who believe that during communion they are receiving the true body and blood of Jesus provided for the forgiveness of sin and not living a lifestyle of unrepentant sin may participate in Holy Communion with us; however, it is preferred if you are a new visitor that you talk with Pastor Gowen before the service if you plan on participating.
WHAT IS HOLY COMMUNION LIKE / DO YOU OFFER GRAPE JUICE AND/OR GLUTEN FREE HOSTS?
During Holy Communion we offer individual cups and a communion cup. You may either take an individual cup, dip your host in the communion cup, or drink from the communion cup. We only offer sacramental wine and do not have a grape juice option. We do have individually wrapped hosts bagged by someone wearing gloves and separated from the other hosts. If you need a gluten free host please mention this when you come up for communion, they will then be provided for you to grab to help prevent cross contamination.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY SERVICE?
Traditional service:
• Our 8:15am service is a traditional hymnal service (Divine Service II setting 2 and Divine Service 1 from the Lutheran Service Book). We have a Keiki (children’s) message, special music and a Connection Point).
• Typically consists of 2-3 hymns being played on an organ sung by the congregation with occasional special not sung by the congregation. Additionally, the responsive part of the service is typically prompted by the organ and chanted.
Contemporary service:
• Our 10:45am service is more “contemporary” in its music but retains a liturgy. During Lent, our evening services we go through the Catechism.
• Typically consists of 2-3 contemporary Christan music songs played and sung by our in-church band. The responsive part of the service is spoken.
HOW LONG IS YOUR WORSHIP SERVICE?
Both of our worship services typically last one hour or just under. Easter, Christmas, and other special event services do tend to last a little longer, but typically complete within 75 minutes.
WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE / ATTIRE FOR ATTENDANCE?
We don’t have a dress code, but encourage everyone to dress like they are going to church in Hawaii (aloha wear, shorts, business casual). We are air conditioned so the temperature is kept around 74 degrees. We do ask that have on some form of shirt and pants/shorts or dress that does not have on a profane message.
DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF AN LCMS CHURCH TO ATTEND?
No! You can come and participate in worship with us regardless of your religious beliefs. Roughly 1/3 of those in attendance each week do not affiliate with the Lutheran church We do ask that you do not cause a disturbance during service, otherwise we may ask you to leave. If you have questions, related to anything in the service Pastor Gowen will be happy to discuss them with you.
DO YOU HAVE A BIBLE STUDY AND/OR SUNDAY SCHOOL?
Yes! We offer a bible study between our traditional and contemporary service each week. The bible study starts roughly at 9:37 that lasts about 50 minutes. To see some of our past bible studies and what our current bible study is CLICK HERE. Additionally, we have Sunday School at 9:37 that lasts about 50 minutes for those 4-14 years-old. Our Sunday school follows the same three-year liturgy that the church uses and is arranged by our Director of Christan Education. To see what the children learn or to use our curriculum for yourself/congregation CLICK HERE.
NURSERY
We do not have a staffed nursery – but we do have a room with a large TV and sound where moms and dads can be with their little one and still see the service (and we encourage them to come in for the Keiki Message and Communion). The room is filled with various toys, books and come coloring pages.
