What We Believe
OUR CORE BELIEFS
ESSENTIAL CHRISTIAN BELIEFS
GOD
There is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise. God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom, justice, and mercy. God -He is unchangeable and the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. (for more information, you can look up the Apostles, Nicene and Athanasian Creeds).
JESUS CHRIST
We believe Jesus Christ-both true man and true God-redeemed all people through His life, death and resurrection. He is our only Savior from sin, death, and the devil. The good news of our salvation in Jesus Christ is called “the Gospel.”
THE TRINITY
Our Savior teaches and responds to the love of the Triune God: the Father, creator of all that exists; Jesus, the Son, who became human to suffer and die for the sins of all human beings and to rise to life again in the ultimate victory over death and Satan; and the Holy Spirit, who creates faith through God’s Word and Sacraments. The three persons of the Trinity are coequal and coeternal, one God.
THE BIBLE
The Bible is the final authority for Christian faith and life. The Bible is Holy because God inspired His prophets, apostles and evangelists to write down His Word to all of humanity. The Bible is God’s own Word and truth. We further believe Jesus Christ is the heart and center of the Scripture and therefore the key to its true meaning (John 1). The primary purpose is to lead us to Jesus so that through Him we may have eternal life. (John 20:21-22) Our sermons and studies are filled with the Good News of God’s love and are rooted in the Word of God.
ADDITIONAL BELIEFS
WE BELIEVE IN SOLA SCRIPTURA
Sola scriptura means scripture alone. The Bible is God’s inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and norm for Christian doctrine.
WE BELIEVE IN SOLA FIDE
Sola fide means faith alone. By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.
WE BELIEVE IN SOLA GRATIA
Sola gratia means grace alone. God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.
WE BELIEVE IN SOLA CHRISTUS
Sola Christus means Christ alone.
WE BELIEVE IN SOLA DE GLORIA
Sola de gloria means to the glory of God alone.
END TIMES
We believe Christ will return visibly and with great glory on the Last Day to judge the world. Unbelievers will rise to shame and torment in hell forever. Believers will rise with glorified bodies and enter everlasting life in heaven with God. We are amillennial.
BAPTISM
We believe baptism is a sacrament which God uses to forgive our sins and receive us into His family. Because it is God’s work, only one baptism is necessary – and even the tiniest of children may be baptized. Like salvation, it is a gift of God. While it is not “necessary for salvation” (the Old Testament) – it is also not to be intentionally ignored or rejected. It is a Means of Grace that God has given out of His love. The amount of water is not as necessary as the Word of God.
SALVATION
Eternal life is found through Jesus Christ alone. He came to reconcile us with God by living a life without sin and willingly dying on the cross to pay the penalty for our transgressions. God raised Him from the dead and now, by grace, offers eternal life as a free gift to all who follow Christ, by faith, as their Lord and Savior. John 14:6 is not exclusionary so much as it is a proclamation that God has provided every person the means and opportunity to find eternal life in Jesus.
THE GOSPEL
Our Savior is a church focused first and foremost on the gospel of Jesus Christ. This gospel declares that God isn’t angry or disassociated from His people. Rather God, through his Son Jesus, is shown to be merciful, forgiving, loving and deeply committed to mankind in a personal manner.
CONVERSION
We believe all people are, by nature, spiritually blind and dead and therefore cannot by their own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ as Lord or come to Him. Instead, the Holy Spirit calls us to faith by the Gospel. God the Holy Spirit earnestly wants to convert all people and bring them to salvation. However, many reject the Word and resist the Holy Spirit and therefore they remain in unbelief and under God’s judgment by their own choice.
THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
We believe the Holy Spirit, by faith, works a renewal of our whole life-in spirit, will, attitude, and desires-so that we now strive to overcome sin and do good works.
HUMANITY
We believe God created the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, in the image of God. This image was lost when they disobeyed God and fell into sin. Sin has brought guilt and condemnation to all people – but even before God spoke the universe and world into creation – He had already set aside His Son to be our Savior (Ephesians 1:4).
HOLY COMMUNION
Communion is a special meal for confessing Christians. As Lutheran Christians we believe Christ’s body and blood are truly present, in, with and under, the bread and wine – and in this meal we receive the forgiveness of our sins and power for Christian living.
THE CHURCH
We believe there is only one church, made up of all who believe in Jesus. Because faith, which makes people members of the church, is invisible, the church is invisible to human eyes. However, members of the invisible church should also be part of a community of believers. Our duty is to maintain and extend God’s church by telling others about Jesus Christ, by personal service, and by prayer and financial support.
LUTHERAN
While we are the “Lutheran” Church – a name that was given to us in the 1500’s – we only follow Martin Luther in so far as his work inspired the Reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century. The teaching of Luther and the reformers can be summarized in three short phrases: Grace alone, Scripture alone, Faith alone. Martin Luther was just one person in the history of the church. A better way to answer the question is, “we are followers of Jesus (Christians) who express our faith through Lutheran teachings and practices.
